  1. HOW TO SEE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SENTENCE ELEMENTS AND PARTS OF SPEECH Trương Văn Ánh Trường Đại học Sài Gòn
  2. SENTENCE ELEMENTS Subject (S); Verb (V); Object (O); Complement (C); Attribute (Attr) and Adverb (Adv). PARTS OF SPEECH + Changeable: N, V, Adj and Adv + Unchangeable: Pronoun, Conjunction, Preposition and Interjection
  3. VERBS In the dictionary, V symbolizes verb to show actions or states. Look (v). 1. see with eyes. 2. seem (appearance), etc. In a sentence a verb may play the role of the main verb (conjugated/finite verb): Ex: He looks ill today. A verb may play the role of a subject: Ex: Look is a verb.
  4. A verb may play the role of complement: Ex: He goal is look forward to seeing her. A verb may play the role of an attribute: Ex: His goal- looking forward to seeing her seems impossible. A verb may play the role of an adverb: Ex: He comes here to look forward to seeing her.
  5. A noun, in a dictionary, indicates things, people, conceptions, ideas, etc. Book (n). In the sentence a noun may play the role of a subject: Ex: Books contains knowledge and experience. A noun may play the role of an object: Ex: He wants a book. A noun may play the role of an attribute:
  6. Ex: He wants his friend, a book. A noun may play the role of an adverb. Ex: The money is kept in a book.
  7. In a dictionary an adjective indicates characters, quality, etc. Adj. symbolizes an adjective. Beautiful (adj) In a sentence an adjective may play the role of a subject: Ex: The beautiful come to Da Nang today. An adjective may play the role of an object. Ex: We need the good.
  8. An adjective may play the role of an attribute. Ex: His friends, the beautiful, will attend the beauty contest. An adjective may play the role of an adverb. Ex: He looks for the best quality in the beautiful.
  9. In a dictionary, an adverb indicate the way, the manner, etc. of verbs, adjectives, etc. Adv symbolizes an adverb. Well (adv) In a sentence an adverb may play the role of a subject. Ex: Well is the way we are in need of. An adverb may play the role of an object. Ex: We need well, the way we do.
  10. An adverb may play the role of an attribute. Ex: We need the way we do, well. An adverb may play the role of an adverb. Ex: The task is done well.
