  4. Reported speech The usual rule is that the verb form moves “one tense back”. Direct speech Reported speech 1 Present Past “I love you.” He said that he loved me. “I’m going out.” Hoa said that she was going out. 2 Present perfect Past perfect “We have met before.” She said that they had met before. 3 Past simple Past perfect “We met in 1987.” He said that they met in 1987. 4 Will would “I will mend it for you.” She said that she would mend it for me. 5 Can could “I can swim.” She said that she could swim.
  5. Changes in Reported Speech 1. Person: It depends I → he / she my → his / her we → they you → I/he/she 2. Tenses: Present Simple → Past Simple Present continuous → Past Continuous Present Perfect → Past Perfect Past Simple → Past Perfect Will → Would May → might Must / have to → had to Can → Could Could, might, ought to, should, would stay the same

Time: now → then, at that time today → that day yesterday → the day before, the previous day last week → the week before/ the previous week last month → the month before / the previous month tomorrow → the following day / the next day next week → the next week/ the following week this week → that week an hour ago → an hour before here → there
  7. Reported speech Note: Notice the use of say/tell say + (that) She said that they were happy together. tell + person (that) He told me (that) he loved Mary.
  8. Reported statements said S said to sb (THAT) S V told sb (move 1 tense back) e.g. “We are happy together.” She said. She said (that) they were happy together. “I love Marry.” he said. He told me (that) he loved Marry.
  9. Reported speech Write the sentences in reported speech. He said, “I love you.” He told her that he loved her. 1. “I’m tired.” She said that she was tired. 2. “I don’t like rock music.” He told her he didn’t like rock music. 3. “I’ll book a table.” He said he would book a table.
  10. Reported speech 4. “I’ve bought a new car.” Paul told us that he had bought a new car. 5. “I live in the city center” She said that she lived in the city center. 6. “We can do it.” They said that they could do it. 7. “I saw the film on TV.” Julie said that she had seen the film on TV.

  12. Reported speech: say, tell, or ask? Complete the sentences with said, told, or asked. 1. Jane asked me if I could lend her some money. 2. I told him that I couldn’t meet him tonight. 3. I said that I was too busy to go out. 4 We asked the man if he could help us.
