Definition Cleft sentences are used to help us focus on a particular part of the sentence and to emphasise what we want to say by introducing it or building up to it with a kind of relative clause.   5. II.GRAMMAR 2.1. SUBJECT FOCUS The boy hit the dog in the garden. S It was the boy who hit the dog in the garden. It + is/was + noun/pronoun + who/that + V
  6. Exercise 1. Write the following sentences after the model, paying attention to the subject of the sentences Example: The man gave her the book. -> It was the man who gave her the book. 1. The boy visited his uncle last month. It was the boy who/that visited his uncle last month. 2. The strict diet drives him crazy. It is the strict diet that drives him crazy. 3. You broken my heart in pieces. It was you who/that broken my heart in pieces. 4. The smoke from the factory chimneys pollutes the air. .It is the smoke from the factory chimneys that pollutes the air. 5. The boys played football all day long. It was the boys who/that played football all day long. 6. The girl received a letter from her friend yesterday .It was the girl who/that received a letter from her friend yesterday. 7. His presence at the meeting frightened the children. .It was his presence at the meeting that frightened the children.

  8. Exercise 2. Write the following sentences after the model, paying attention to the objective of the verb. Example: The boy hit the dog in the garden. -> It was the dog that the boy hit in the garden. 1. The man is learning English. It is English that the man is learning. 2. The pedestrian asked the policeman a lot of questions It was the policeman that/who(m) the pedestrian asked a lot of questions. 3. My brother bought an old motorbike from our neighbor. It was an old motorbike that my brother bought from our neighbor. 4. My younger sister always keeps her doll carefully. .It is my younger sister’s doll/the doll of my younger sister that she always keeps carefully. 5. The little boy greeted his grandfather in a strange language. It was his grandfather that/who(m) the little boy greeted in a strange language. 6. I went to Hanoi yesterday. .It was Hanoi that I went to yesterday. 7. The dog bared at the stranger. .It was the stranger that/who(m) the dog bared at.

Write the following sentences after the model, paying attention to the subject of the sentences Example: She bought a present at the shop. -> It was at the shop she bought a present. 1. She made some cakes for tea. It was for tea that she made some cakes . 2. His father repaired the bicycle to make his son happy. It was to make his son happy that his father repaired the bicycle . 3. Susan bought her husband an anniversary gift at a sport shop. It was at a sport shop that Susan bought her husband an anniversary gift. 4. You can kill computer viruses by using this software .It is by using this soft ware that you can kill computer viruses. 5. He met his wife in Britain. It was in Britain that he met his wife. 6. She bought that present from the shop .It was from the shop that she bought that present . 7. The meeting started at 8.00 a.m .It was at 8.00 a.m. that the meeting started.
