- Grammar Conditional sentences Eg 1:If he studies hard, he will pass the exam. Vs/es Will+ Vo Type I: It’s possible to happen in the present or future. Eg 2: If he had much money, he would buy a house. Ved(be->were) Would + Vo Type II: It’s impossible to happen in the present. Eg 3: If he had paid attention to the lesson, Had+ V3 he wouldn’t have got the bad mark. Would have V3 Type III: It’s impossible to happen in the past.
- Conditional sentences: TYPE IF CLAUSE MAIN CLAUSE I S+ V/ V(s/es) S+ will +(not) +Vinf (future shall possibility) →do/does +not + Vinf II S+ would +(not)+ V inf (present S+V2/ed(be ->were) could unreal) →didn’t +Vinf III S+ would +(not) + (past unreal) S+ had (not)+ V(ed/3) have +V3/ed

- Conditional in reported speech Examples: 1. “ If I hears any news, I will let you know”, she said. → She said that if she heard any news she would let me know 2. “If it didn’t rain, I would go out”, Minh said to Hoa. → Minh told Hoa that if it didn’t rain he would go out the night before. 3. “ What would you have done, if it had rained yesterday?” Minh said to Mai →Minh asked Mai what she would have done if it had rained the day before
- Exercise 2. Change the following conditional sentences into reported speech
- 1.“What would you do if you were a billionaire?” the man asked the woman. → The man asked the woman what she would do if she were a billionaire. 2.“If you had asked me, I would have lent you my motorbike,” the man said to me. → The man told me if I had asked him, he would have lent me his motorbike. 3.“They will be very disappointed if you do not come” the man said to his daughter. → The man told his daughter they would be very disappointed if she did not come. 4.“I’m sure they will understand if you explain the situation to them,” the boy said to the girl. → The boy told the girl he was sure they would understand if she explain the situation to them.

- Question 1:Change this sentence into the reported speech. “ I’ll come to see you if I have time,” the man said to her. The man told her that he would come to see her if he had time.
- Question 2: Choose the best answer: “ What would you say if someone stepped on your feet?” he asked her. √ A. He asked her what she would say if someone stepped on her feet. B.He asked her what would she say if someone stepped on her feet. C.He asked her what you would say if someone stepped on her feet.
