  1. Unit 9: Undersea World

  3. I am a whale!!!
  4. Work in pairs . Discuss the following questions. 1. Do you think whales are fish? Why (not) ? The whale is a mammal because it raises its young on milk. 2. Why do people keep hunting whales? Because they want to catch whales for food, oil, leather and other products.
  5. -mammal ['mổml] (n) :any animals that gives birth to live babies, not eggs, and feeds its young on milk e.g.: cat, humans and whale are all mammals
  6. -krill [kril] (n) : very small Shellfish that live in the sea e.g.: Krills are the favorite food of whale
  7. - Conservation [,kɔnsə:'vei∫n] : (n) the protection or preventing sth from being lost , wasted, damaged or destroyed e.g. : The conservation of forest and wild animals.
  8. -Whaling ['weiliη] : (n) the activity or business of hunting and killing whales e.g.: The population of the whale is decreasing because of whaling.
  9. - migrate [mai'greit] : (v) to move from one part of the world to another, according to the season e.g. :Swallows migrate south in winter
  10. Listen to some information about whales and decide whether the following T F statements are true (T) or false (F) 1.The whale is the third largest animal that has ever lived on Earth ✓ 2.Whales are said to be the most intelligent animals in the ocean ✓ 3.Some whales are known to move into warm waters too give birth. ✓ 4.Whales are in danger because of the increase in population of other sea ✓ animals 5.Some people are still killing whales for food ✓
  11. Task 2: Listen again and then answer the following questions 1. What is the length and weight of the blue whale? The blue whale grows to 30 meters in length and over 200 tons in weight 2. Why do whales like to feed in the cold oceans? Because there is a lot of krill in the cold oceans 3. According to the listening passage, what are the good feeding grounds for whales? The good feeding grounds for whales are cold water in the North and South Atlantic Ocean and the North and South Pacific Ocean 4. What is the main reason for the decrease in the whale populations? Heavy hunting is the main reason for the decrease in the whale populations. 5. What have conservation groups asked the International Whaling Commission to do? Conservation groups have asked the International Whaling Commission to stop most whaling. 6. What would happen if we didn’t take any measures to protect whales? If we didn’t take any measures to protect whales they would disappear forever
  12. Talk about whales, using the following cues. ❖ Their length and weight ❖ Their feeding grounds and food ❖ Their reasons for protecting whales
