- Comparative forms of adjectives:
- 1. Short and Long Adjectives: - Short adjectives: with one syllable Ex: big, small, tall, thick, hot, warm - Long adjectives: with two or more syllables Ex: useful, expensive, modern, beautiful Exceptions:The following adjectives are considered as ‘short’. + Adjectives with two syllables ending in “y”: Ex: funny, easy, pretty, happy, lazy, crazy + Adjectives ending in “er”, “w”, “le” Ex: quiet, clever, narrow, simple.
- 2. Comparatives: a) Short Adjectives Ex1: John is Tom (is). S Be Adj_er

- Notes: How to add “_ER” * General rule: Add “ ” to almost all short adjectives. * Other cases:
- - Adjectives ending in a consonant, preceded by a vowel, double the ending consonant, then add “_ER”. Ex: big → bigger fat → fatter - Adjectives ending in mute “e” , drop “e” then add “_ER”. Ex: safe → safer nice → nicer - Adjectives with 2 syllables ending in “y”, drop “y” then add “_IER”. Ex: happy → happier lucky → luckier - Adjectives ending in _w, _er, _le, add “ER”. Ex: new → newer clever → cleverer

- 1. Complete the passage below with a suitable comparative form of the adjectives provided. Sometimes I hear adults around me say that it is (0.good) better for children to grow up in the city than in the countryside. - * Comparative forms of adverbs * Comparative forms of Adverbs are just like the Comparative forms of Adjectives. - Almost all adverbs of manner are long because they are formed by Adj , so we use “more” FORM: Ex: Mr. Pike walks more slowly than Mrs. Mary (does). Nga works more quietly than Nam (does).
- - Only these following adverbs (the same form as adjectives) are short: soon, late, early, fast, hard FORM: Ex: Phong gets up earlier than anyone in his family. Nga works harder than Nam (does). : Some irregular forms of adverbs of manner well → better badly → worse Ex: I believe you’ll do better in the next test. Nam drives worse than his brother (does).
