- Noun clauses vs. Adjective clauses (Phân biệt mệnh đề danh từ và mệnh đề tính từ) Trương Văn Ánh Trường Đại học Sài Gòn
- Complement of a noun The fact that the prisoner was guilty was plain to everyone. The news that he told you was not true. > We may delete the preceding noun: That the prisoner was guilty was plain to everyone. That he told you was not true. > We may also delete the noun clause: The fact was plain to everyone. The news was not true.
- Adjective clause The fact that the prisoner told was plain to everyone. The news that he heard was not true. Notes: “The prisoner told” and “he heard “ are not complete. In these sentences, the dependent clauses are adjective clauses.
- If it is a noun clause, the preceding noun is extra (We may delete it). If it is an adjective clause, the preceding noun must exist. A noun clause is a complete sentence. An adjective clause is an incomplete one.
- Exercises: 1. The story that Diep abandoned Lan is sad. 2. The story that is told by Grandmom is sad. 3. The task that you should have finished is vital. 4. The task that you should have repaired the machine is vital. 5. The message that he wrote last night makes her sad. 6. The message that he has a new girl friend makes her sad.
