  15. TOPIC 5: FREE TIME AND ENTERTAINMENT Working and studying are very important and essential, but free time and entertainment are also necessary and inevitable. That justifies the following saying right: "Studying without playing makes Jack dull". There are so many kinds of activities to enjoy in our free time. Some people read books, newspapers, magazines and novels. Gathering around each other after dinner, they read good tales and together discuss and draw out their own beautiful lessons. What a cozy family it is!
  16. Some people enjoy watching films at home or in the cinema. They, especially the youth, sometimes go to the cinema. And this is a good chance for them to find and choose a future life- partner. Nowadays most of people like to play sports. There are various kinds of sports to satisfy every taste. The male, maybe, like football and occasionally they themselves are football players. The female often play tennis, badminton or ping-pong. Every morning we can see some people doing morning exercises , others jogging, others doing fit exercises and so on. What strong and healthy citizens they are!
  17. Some people spend their free time going sight- seeing in the mountain, in the countryside, in the parks and around the lake. Now and then they pay a visit to a museum or a gallery, enjoying the masterpieces by famous painters. Each person has his own way of spending his free time. How can I tell you about all of them?
  18. SUGGESTED QUESTIONS • What do you do in your free time? • What kind of sports do you like best? • What kind of reading do you like? • Why is music an important kind of entertainment? • Do you agree on the saying ," Shopping is a way of killing time"?
  19. TOPIC 6: TRAVEL Modern life is impossible without traveling. Every day everybody travels around by car, by bus, by train, by plane, by ship or on foot. Two hundred years ago, the fastest means of transport was realized by horse in warm countries and by dog sled in cold ones. Then sailing boat or rowing boat was the means by water. Kings or mandarins could travel by palanquin carried by soldiers or slaves. What great contrast between the "passengers" and the "drivers"!
  20. Nowadays we can travel hundreds of times as fast as our ancestor could. Only Tito has been able to travel as a passenger by spaceship so far. As for all of us going by plane is the fastest way although the nightmare of plane crashes in New York have still haunted us. However, most of the working people have never boarded a plane yet because plane tickets are too expensive for them. The first most popular way is a coach or a bus. Most people can afford it whenever they want to travel. The second most popular way is a train which can carry a lot of people and cargoes at the same time.
  21. Many people prefer to travel by car. The advantages of this way are that you can make your own time-table, and you can stop wherever you wish - where there is something interesting to see, where can you eat or drink or where you can take a rest or spend the night. Travelling in the area with a dense water network such as Cai Nuoc, Thoi Binh or Nam Can, you can take nothing but a boat or a ship. Then you can enjoy beholding the sights of "free birds in the sky and innumerable fishes swimming freely in the water". How fantastic! Everybody has his own way to enjoy travelling to his taste. Let him do as he likes.

Each person is brought up and grows up in a family. So he is closely bound to the other members : parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters. Being dutiful to them is his obligation.
  24. Teachers are those who teach us to become useful citizens for country. Spending so much time doing research and studying, teachers try their best to teach us both the right and the good with the only hope that we will continue and develop the cause handed down by our forefathers. How can we forget their deep favour and fervid loyalty ? Friends and comrades are those who shoulder by shoulder study, work and even fight together with us . We are of the same mind and in the same difficulties, share miseries and happiness. How can't we abandon them ?
  25. We were born in the places which are considered the most beautiful in our opinion. A musician regards our home country as a cluster of sweet carambolas. That sweet flavour will remain at the bottom of our hearts until the day when we are gone. To be a dutiful child, to be a good pupil, to be a faithful friend and to be a compatriot, each person must try to be trained for all his life. Never ask what everyone has done for us but ask what we have done for everyone.
  26. SUGGESTED QUESTIONS • Do you have to support your parents ? • What do your friends and you often do together ? • Have you ever intended to leave your country ? • What do you think about corruption, bribery and smuggling ? • What have you done for everybody?
  27. TOPIC 8 : HEALTH AND WELFARE Man can't live without avoiding diseases. Some diseases are common, easily-suffered and easily- healed but others are incurable, serious and able to cause death. How to be healthy is the question . at first, we must strictly follow a regular system of working and resting, drinking and eating. To know how to eat and what to eat is very necessary to keep us strong, hygienic, and healthy. Working exhaustedly and playing too much can cause a lot of diseases, too serious to be cured.
  28. Recently a lot of hospitals have been built and a lot of doctors have been trained. Doctors are always people's physicians, ready to help us everywhere and any time when we need to be treated. And hospitals are always open to us, the young as well as the old, the rich as well as the poor, no distinction of nations, nationalities, religions, ranks or classes.
  29. Medical insurance proves very effective in our society nowadays. Sometimes the money we earn every month isn't enough to spend on medicine or hospitalization. Then having our health insured helps us live without worrying about them. How lucky we are ! Modern life, modern medicine, modern medical equipment - all help us over- come emergencies and difficulties concerning our health.

In clothes department we can find clothes of all sizes and colors. They are cotton, woolen, silk, terylene and so on. There are so many ready- made clothes for us to choose. It is also easy to choose suitable cloth for a suit.
  32. Round the market, there are always numerous shops. In each shop, we can buy some certain kinds of goods. Household articles can be found everywhere. They are made of wood, plastic, metal, etc. Some of them are made by hand while some of them are made by machine. We can see from a needle to a big pan in a market. If there's something wrong with us, let's go to a chemist's. Here we can ask for the very medicine we need, even foreign medicine. Many kinds of medicine are manufactured in Vietnam. They are not only effective but also cheap.
  33. The sellers are always friendly and enthusiastic. They are ready to satisfy every taste of the customers. The prices are always reasonable. If we buy a great number of goods, we can ask for discounts. In Vietnam we use the metric system to measure. For example, we use litre to measure volume, metre to measure length, kilo to measure weight. It 's very easy to use and calculate.
  34. SUGGESTED QUESTIONS • Who often does shopping in your family ? • Do you often choose cheap goods or expensive goods ? Why ? • Do you often buy home-made goods or foreign goods ? Why ? • What kind of goods does our province produce? • What do you like to buy most?
  35. TOPIC 10: FOOD AND DRINK All of us have to eat to live. The foods which we eat are different in every part of the country and in every country in the world. Some people eat rice, some eat bread, some eat potatoes, whereas other people eat maize or manioc, etc. Some people want them boiled, some want them steamed, some want them fried while other people want them baked.
  36. Traditionally, Vietnamese people eat boiled rice. Besides, we eat meat, fish and vegetables. Rarely do we eat bread or potatoes. All of the foods have to be boiled, baked, steamed or fried. We rarely eat raw foods except vegetables. We often enjoy fresh foods, and seldom do we eat ready-foods such as canned foods or dry foods. Every day we have three meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner. We don 't have supper. Most of us have our meals at home. Sometimes we eat out. Then we can enjoy our meals in a cafeteria, a canteen or a restaurant Sometimes we attend a party.
  37. We often drink plain water and the water is often boiled before drinking. In a cafeteria we can drink ice tea or coke. We rarely drink milk . We drink it only when we are ill. Sometimes at a party we drink beer or wine. That 's such a lovely day! SUGGESTED QUESTIONS • What kind of food do you like to eat? • What kind of fruit do you like to eat? • What kind of drink do you have every day? • Do you like to drink wine or beer? • Who often cooks food in your family?
  38. TOPIC 11: SERVICES In daily activities we always need services. Nowadays our services are very abundant and effective. We often go to the post office to post a letter or to send a parcel. Sometimes we receive parcel or something from our friends and relatives all over the country and all over the world. So sometimes we don ' t have to send a telegraph or a fax.
  39. Banks and bankings are very necessary in modern life. We can deposit our money and receive interests. Sometimes we need money. We can borrow it from the bank at low rate of interests. Businessmen can take cheques everywhere. No worry about loss or robbery. It is easy and fast for them to cash cheques at any bank they like. Foreigners are always welcomed to exchange money in the banks. Here they can exchange their own money for other kinds of money. Nowadays the police are very dynamic and creative the police are people's real friends. They are always ready to support people day and night. But they are very strict to criminals and trouble- makers. Many thefts and robberies are settled quickly. You can send for the police almost immediately.
  40. Many workshops and garages appear rapidly to meet the need of people. In the street we can see bicycle or motorcycle repairers. We can have our means of transport repaired or checked. Now and then we can see a petrol station along the road or the street. We can buy petrol at the retail seller's. SUGGESTED QUESTIONS 1 . Which service do you often need? 2 . Do you think we need more policemen ? 3. Do you think that some service is fraudulant? 4. How is the relationship between people and the police? 5. What do you think about Chinese motorcycles?
  41. TOPIC 12: PLACE Sometimes we come to a strange place. Then we don't know how to go or what direction to follow. We will go up to any person we meet and ask him for the directions. We will use some expressions such as: Can you please tell me the way to ? Please tell me where is ? Excuse me. How could I get there ? Can you please tell me what the shortest way to get there Of course when we receive the answers, we don't forget to say: thank you; thank you very much; It's very kind of you; thank you for your help It is true that Vietnamese people often say " the way is in our mouths".
  42. If a stranger wants to ask for some information about the places and the directions, we can use many expressions to show him such as: Go along this street; Turn left at the first corner; Turn right at the second corner ; second right; third left; It's next to ; It's near here; It takes you five minutes to get there. And then we can advise him: You can take a bus to get there; you can walk there. If we are very kind and we have free time, we can take him door to door. In this case we should be friendly to answer all the questions clearly and carefully. Hence we will make a good impression on him about the people in our area. Returning home, he will tell his family and friends about our land and people favourably.
  43. SUGGESTED QUESTIONS 1 . Have you ever been to a strange place ? 2. How did you find way then ? 3 . Have you ever shown way to strangers ?Especially foreigners ? 4 . In what language do people often ask the way and give directions in foreign countries ?
  44. TOPIC 13: FOREIGN LANGUAGE In modern life we contact not only our native people but also foreigners. Human beings' knowledge is immense and it has been written out in numerous languages. So it is very important that we should learn foreign languages. Among them English is the most important because it is the most popular. Speaking and listening are two important skills to contact people. Speaking helps us to express our ideas and describe what we want to mention. When we speak we must pay our attention to pronunciation.
  45. If we make mistakes in pronunciation, our partners (counterparts) can't understand what we say. Listening helps to understand what ideas our partners want to express. Listening exam is often horrible to candidates and they often get bad marks in listening. Vietnamese people are often bad at speaking and listening because we rarely contact foreigners and only few of us can speak English. More often we want to read newspapers, books and magazines in foreign languages. In daily activities we often see advertisements, labels, trademarks and catalogues in English.
  46. Then we often stop to read them. Sometimes we have to write a letter, a contract or to fill in a form in foreign languages. Of course, writing is very difficult to master. We can speak a language fluently; but when we have to write out something we find that we make many mistakes, even terrible mistakes. Then we can ask our teachers to correct them. To understand a language, we have to not only learn vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar but also master expressions and idioms. Then we have to study another culture. It is true that learning a language means learning another culture.
  47. Suggested Questions 1. How many languages can you speak? What are they? 2. Besides English, what languages can you speak? 3. Will you learn another language in the future? What is it? 4. How do you think English will influence your future? 5. Among four skills, which one is the most difficult? Which is the easiest?
  48. TOPIC 14 : WEATHER Vietnam is a tropical country. There are only two seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. That is, it is sunny in six months and rainy in six months. So there aren't four clear seasons such as: spring, summer, autumn and winter. The weather is cool and warm. The average temperature is from 220C (degree centigrade) to 300C; It 's rarely too cold or too hot. It doesn't snow and we can see fog in only some places such as in Dalat or in the mountains. We can't find a desert in Vietnam.
  49. Sometimes, in the rainy season there's a storm in the Central or the North of Vietnam. There's no storm in South Vietnam but for several years there's a flood in the Mekong delta. In the rainy season it often rains. Occasionally there's a shower. The rainfall is very high. It's very convenient for agriculture. Here the plants grows rapidly and well. And plants are very abundant. And so are animals. Foreigners always enjoy many kinds of vegetables in Vietnam.
  50. They are very cheap but very nutritious. Leaving Vietnam, foreign tourists never forget so many kinds of delicious fruit. In the North, they can enjoy leeches, apricots In the south they can enjoy longans, durians, mangoes, grapefruits Even though bananas are very cheap but they always like them.
