- The + blind = blind people ► The+adj = N ( a group of people) Eg: The rich = rich people The disabled = disabled people The injured = injured people The English = English people ► “The + adj” + V(plural)
- Which is a correct sentence? 1. The rich is not always happy. 2. The rich are not always happy. 1. The blind have the ability to play music well 2. The blind has the ability to play music well
- Exercise 1: Complete these sentences using the+ one of the adjectives Vocabulary: 1. injured / 'indʒəd/ : bị thương 2. unemployed / ʌnim'plɔid/ : thṍt nghiợ̀p 3. sick / sik/: ụ́m; bị bợ̀nh 4. ambulance / 'ổmbjuləns/ : xe cṍp cứu 5. rob / rɔb/ : lṍy trụ̣m

- 2. Used to + infinitive
- 5 years ago now He used to be fat He is not fat now
- He used to smoke a lot. Now he doesn’t smoke any more. ► Usage: “used to” expresses a habit, activity that existed in the past.
- Eg1 : I used to smoke a lot. • (+) S + used to + V (infinitive) • (-) S+ didn’t + use to + V (infinitive) • (?) Did + S+ use to + V (infinitive) ? Eg 2 : What did you use to do as a child ? Wh-word +did+ S +use to+ V (infinitive)? ➔I used to ► be/ get used to+Ving: quen với Eg 3: I am used to getting up early.
- 1. He went to the church when he was in Paris. ➔He used to go to the church when he was in Paris. 2. I eat ice-cream now, but I disliked eating it when I was a child. ➔I didn`t use to like/ eat ice-cream when I was a child. 3. Tony used to live in London when he was 10. ➔ Where did Tony use to live when he was 10 ?
- Exercise 2 : Complete the sentences with used to+ a suitable verb. 1. Dennis gave up smoking two years ago. He 40used to smoke cigarettes a day. 2. Liz aused to have/ ride motorbike, but last years she sold it and bought a car. 3. We came to live in Manchester a few years ago. We inused to live Nottingham. 4. I rarely eat ice cream now, but I .itused to eat/ like when I was a child. 5. Jim myused to be best friend, but we aren’t friends any longer.
- 3. Which as a connector
- Example: Mary often gets high marks. This makes her parents feel happy →Mary often gets high mark , which makes her parents feel happy ► S + V , which + V
- Exercise 3: Join a sentence form A with one from B to make a new sentence. Use Which. 1. Sheila couldn`t come to the party, which was a pity. 2. Jill isn’t on the phone, which makes it difficult to contact her. 3. Neil has passed his examination, which is a good news 4. Our flight was delayed, which meant we had to wait for hours at the airport.
