- Functions of Adjectives in a sentence 1/ Attribute (Before or after nouns) A good girl A girl good at English + Some adjectives must be before nouns: various, inner, etc. 2/ Subject complement: after linking verbs (Patterns 1 and 4) He is handsome. She becomes rich. + Some adjectives must be after linking verbs: alive, well, afraid, etc.
- 3/ Object complement: (Pattern 9) She makes him miserable.
- Functions of Aderbs in a sentence 1/ Modifying verbs He learns English well. 2/ Modifying adjectives He is extremely wicked. 3/ Modifying other adverbs He runs extremely fast.
- 4/ Modifying phrases He stops just before me. 5/ Modifying clauses He supports her family just because he loves her. 6/ Modifying whole sentences Generally, he is honest.
- Adjectives and adverbs which have two syllables and end in OW, Y, LE, ET, URE, ER are considered short. narrow - narrower happy – happier gentle – gentler quiet – quieter secure – securer clever – cleverer
- 3 degrees of comparison: + Positive: As As + Comparative: THAN + Superlative: THE (MOST/ -EST)
- Negative, semi-negative adverbs + In the mid or in the end Normal sentence Ex: He never drinks beer. + In the beginning Yes-no question form Ex: Never does he drink beer.
