  2. Two kinds of preceding nouns: Clear and non-clear + Clear nouns: Everybody knows them. They are proper nouns and nouns modified by possessive adjectives, possessive nouns and demonstrative adjectives. There is one or two commas to separate the main clause and the adjective clause. Ex: G.W. Bush, who was the 41st president of the USA, died on December 30th, 2018. His mother, who is very devoted, is loved by him very much.
  3. + Non-clear nouns: Everyone does not know them. They are common nouns. There is no comma. Which and Who can be replaced by That. Which and Whom can be omitted. Ex: The man who has just died is great. The man that has just died is great. The province which he visited is the poorest. The province he visited is the poorest. The province that he visited is the poorest.
  4. Writers may use special contexts to express clear or non-clear nouns. Ex: Nhi, who you know, studies syntax excellently. “Nhi” is clear, so the adjective clause is non- restrictive. Nhi who you know studies syntax excellently. “Nhi” is not clear (Four girls named after Nhi), so the adjective clause is restrictive.
  5. Nouns Non-clear Clear Restrictive clause Non-restrictive clause (Defining clause) (Non-defining clause) Notes: Students and candidates are not allowed to use special contexts.
  6. Good luck!
